A recent report from the National Institute of Public Health claims that infection control procedures related to distance and the number of people within a room have been broken.
Finnmark Hospital Managing Director Siri Tau Ursin admits to violating procedures.
Following the first positive test on October 5, a total of seven patients and 26 staff members have been infected with the coronavirus.
Tau Ursin believes that one of the reasons for the breach was the low spread of the infection across the country at this time, and especially in Finnmark.
– People gathered for a report in the morning, they gathered in the meeting rooms and maybe it was one or two more in relation to what is in our procedures when it comes to distance and infection control.
– He got back into the habit
The CEO says the hospital is old and not well organized enough to maintain a good distance between employees.
– It was built at a time when there were fewer doctors, nurses and patients, says Tau Ursin.
– But you know the place is too small. Shouldn’t you be able to adapt?
– Yes, the procedures are there and we have made the adjustments. But then there is a report, it is a meeting and everyone wants to participate and get the same information. Then all of a sudden we have had one or two more in the room, because we have returned to the habits we had before the pandemic hit.
Have confidence in the hospital
The Norwegian Institute of Public Health suspects that the outbreak may have spread among employees in connection with meetings and teaching, and social gatherings at work and in private.
Hammerfest Township helped draft the report and is confident that the hospital will take over now.
– As I know, the hospital is now on track to implement the necessary routines to prevent further spread of the infection, says Mayor Marianne Sivertsen Næss.
Resume activity on Monday
Due to last month’s outbreak, the hospital has only admitted emergency patients since October 23.
On Monday, they will increase activity by receiving more types of patients. However, they ask for understanding that they will not be fully operational from day one.
– This is an exercise that we have not done before, we also have no one to compare ourselves to, so we take the time we need, says Siri Tau Ursin.
Initially it is about opening dialysis, giving birth and a pediatric outpatient consultation.
