GJERDRUM (VG) Two more dead were found after the landslide in Gjerdrum on Tuesday afternoon. The two were found in the same area after tagging with dogs.
After a search with an excavator, police and canine patrols, today two more dead are found after the landslide in Gjerdrum.
It has been a demanding loin to record. The dead were six feet deep in the camp. They were found in the search area that we have been working on for much of the time, both in the search for the death toll and in the rescue operation, task leader Mari Stoltenberg said at a press conference Tuesday for the night.
The finds were made this afternoon with approx. two hour intervals.
– The first was found shortly after 3 pm, and the person in question was found in the area that we now prioritize for a few days. Two hours later, another deceased was found in the same area, Stoltenberg says.
The two deceased were taken out of the area for forensic examinations and autopsies. Kripos’ ID group is also linked to the case.
The identification will be ready no earlier than Wednesday morning, according to police.
Demanding area
At the end of January, the search for the last three missing persons was resumed by means of an excavator, among other things. It was possible after a new construction road was added to the search area.
– It is quite clear that the collaboration we had has contributed to the findings. We have searched with excavator, fire department and police. But they were dog marks, which meant we kept digging in the relevant spot, says Stoltenberg.
Police say that the area where the search was carried out was demanding.
– It is soft and thick clay in some places and very hard in others. But even though it’s a demanding area, we’ve had an idea of where we should be spending our time, says Stoltenberg.
One person is still missing, and Stoltenberg tells VG that it will still be a job for the planning group, which can also look for new search areas.
– The last person we have had in our mind all along. We are aware that someone is missing, says Stoltenberg.
The last time the police found a dead man was on January 3. By then, seven people had been found and identified. A few days later, the search entered a new phase and there was no longer any hope of finding survivors.
– Mixed feelings
The police have been in close dialogue with the families, and relatives have been notified of the findings.
– I’m here with mixed feelings. I express relief and gratitude that the work has paid off, even though we have long been aware of the reality of this tragedy. We knew the finds didn’t mean we found anyone alive, but they have been accounted for and I’m grateful for that, Mayor Anders Østensen said.
The rapid clay landslide took place at Ask in Gjerdrum on December 30 last year. Several of the residents of the landslide area have been allowed to return home.
