The Swedish rescue service Sjöräddningen claims on Saturday that the ship is still stranded, but there are no fuel leaks, Aftonbladet reports. The ferry does not take water either.
The grounding took place around 1:00 p.m. at the entrance to the town of Mariehamn. There are 429 people on board the ferry, of which 331 are passengers.
The ship was heading from Stockholm to Turku via Mariehamn and there was a stranding in the port area.
The crew on board have communicated that they do not need assistance. The Finnish maritime rescue service and the coast guard are on their respective ships, but are waiting to evacuate the ship or tow it to port.
– I never experienced anything like this
It is not clear what caused the incident, but strong winds are reported in the area. Viking Line has canceled several other outings.
A passenger tells Aftonbladet that he was sitting in the cabin when the ship ran aground.
– I saw that it had started blowing correctly, but I did not see any reason to worry.
Then it happened.
– He shuddered. He has never experienced anything like this, he says.
No one in danger
It is unclear whether the ship will be able to continue sailing on Saturday.
– We must take the time to find out what has happened, but the goal is to get passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible. But I don’t know exactly how to do it, says Eleonora Hansi, Viking Line press manager, to SVT.
None of the passengers should be in danger.
