Fatal accident, fishing boat | Confirmed man dead after missing reported fishing boat

A fisherman in his 50s from Troms was confirmed dead after being found in the waters of the Breivikf Fjord in Hammerfest.

The man and the fishing boat were reported missing at approximately 8:00 p.m. Friday after he did not return from fishing. An extensive search with rescue skates, two helicopters and several fishing boats was started in the Breivikfjord area off Sørøya in Finnmark.

Just past three-thirty, the Finnmark Police District confirmed that it was Kristian Elvevoll, 50, of Sørreisa, who died.

– At 10:15 p.m., a man was found at sea. He was taken by rescue helicopter from Sea King to the hospital in Hammerfest. There his death is confirmed. Relatives have been notified, Chief Rescue Officer Sten Rune Nikolaisen at the National Rescue Center for Northern Norway tells NTB.

The missing fishing boat has not been found and is believed to have sunk. Police in Finnmark also reported the night of the accident through Saturday. The fisherman is from Troms.

– We have searched the boat, but we have only found remains in the sea, says the rescue leader.
