The government is creating a separate expert group to propose measures for the country’s students. – Positive initiative, says the Norwegian student organization.
In a press release Thursday, the Ministry of Education and Research writes that they have now created a group of experts who will evaluate and recommend measures for students.
– They will make recommendations on exams, but also suggestions on how we can ensure that students complete their studies and how we can improve the situation around loneliness and mental health, says Minister of Research and Higher Education Henrik Asheim (H) to VG.
Worried
In October, Asheim said he was concerned about the students. Now repeat that message:
– There are many students who feel lonely in the dormitory and follow digital teaching. Many have worked well to follow up with students in various ways, but I think that this work needs to be intensified, simply because I am concerned about how they are doing.
On Thursday, the government presented robust new measures to prevent the spread of the infection in Norway. These measures will also affect students.
– The infection situation in society is serious and we must live with strict infection control measures for a while longer. So I think we need to do even more than we have done now to make sure students have good follow-up, have contact with each other, and can complete both studies and exams in the future, says Asheim.

Comes with suggestions this month.
The expert group will be made up of representatives from the Council of Universities and Colleges, the Council of Professional Associations, the Norwegian Directorate of Health and the National Institute of Public Health. Students and the community council will also be involved in the work. The group is led by the Ministry of Education.
The group will present its recommendations before November 23.
Positive student organization
The leader of the Norwegian Student Organization (NSO), Anders Trohjell, is happy that the government is taking action.
– This is a preliminary solution that has been waited a long time, but it is positive that the government is taking this initiative.
It points out that the responsibility of students also rests with educational institutions and student organizations.
– We hope this group identifies the measures that can be implemented there, says Trohjell, and emphasizes that students are a particularly vulnerable group when it comes to mental health.

I hope to abandon even more stringent measures
In the press release, the Ministry of Education and Research writes that educational institutions should continue to assess whether they can reduce activity on campus in the future to reduce pressure on public transport.
– It is also important that students, like everyone else, think about how many they know and how they are. I know it is demanding after months of little social contact, but the situation is dire and we must do what we can to reduce the number of infections quickly to avoid even more stringent measures, says Asheim.
