Even (4) only has a few years to live

Even Søraunet (4) is one of 4,000 children living with life-threatening illnesses in Norway. The help they receive from the health service is not good enough, professionals believe.

The first time his parents worry that something is wrong with Even is when he begins to squint.

The eyes are as green as before, but are they still looking at the same point? There has also been some ambiguity about the words you previously spoke so clearly. And the spoon you eat with, hasn’t it started to shake a bit on the way to your mouth?

“It’s probably not serious,” Beate and Sigurd Søraunet tell each other.

But then there is this little finger.

Since he was born one day in March 2016, Even has been out early with everything. To crawl, get up and form words. But she refuses to let go of Mommy or Daddy’s finger. Every time his parents try to encourage Even to go alone, he hangs on.

That Even never dared to let go of Mommy or Daddy’s finger was one of the reasons his parents were concerned. Photo: Private

It will be 1 year old. 15 months. 18 months. But it still holds.

Children develop differently, they say around them, everything is as it should be. But Beate is restless. Something is wrong.

It’s almost as if Evens development is receding.
