Nearly two thirds of all crown deaths in the world have been in Europe. But now it appears that strict quarantine laws have helped.
In several European countries, health authorities report lower infection rates, fewer patients in intensive care units and fewer deaths.
More than 20,000 people have died of covid-19 in Spain, one of the most affected countries in the world. But both death rates and the number of new infections have decreased somewhat.
As of yesterday, 565 Spaniards died as a result of covid-19. That’s 20 less than the day before, says Spain’s health minister.
Emergency aid coordinator Fernando Simon says they are considering relaxing the strict coronary rules.
“We are very close to being able to soften, but not yet,” Simon said at a press conference on Saturday.
The Spanish have one of the strictest doors in Europe. In Barcelona, the city’s children have not been away for 35 days, Judith Argila (35) tells NRK. It begins to spoil both health and mood.
– We have seen the infection figures and we have some hope. At the same time, the uncertainty is great and many are beginning to grow impatient. Several are asking for a softening, so that we can go out or exercise, as in other European countries, says Argila, who lives in the center of Barcelona.
Germany has “control”
Germany’s health minister Jens Spahn said a week ago that more people were well informed than sick. Now German authorities say the pandemic is “under control.”
The infection rate has been reduced to 0.7. This means that each infected person infects less than another on average. In Norway, the figure is now 0.67.
3,868 Germans have died from covid-19 and the number is increasing. However, it is much less than in the other important countries of the EU, Spain, France and Italy. 134,000 Germans are confirmed infected.
France also sees light at the end of the tunnel.
On Friday, the number of crown patients in French intensive care units fell for the ninth day in a row, from 6,248 on Thursday to 6,027 on Friday. This week President Emmanuel Macron said the curfew will last until May 11.
Hans Klimt, head of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Europe, says there are reasons for cautious optimism in some parts of Europe.
– The next few weeks will be critical. Don’t hesitate: Although it is spring, we are in the midst of a storm, Kluge said at a press conference on Thursday.

Italy: victory in the south
In Italy, which was the first major blow from the virus in Europe, 575 people died Thursday through Friday this week. When the worst storm hit the end of March, more than 900 people died per day. The number of patients in intensive care units has decreased by 25 percent in the past two weeks.
Italian health authorities now announce victory over the coronavirus in the south of the country.
– We have prevented the spread of infections in the southern regions. This is now the fact, the head of the Italian Health Authority, Franco Locatelli, said on Friday.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conti’s intervention proved to be the right medicine, Locatelli said.
The virus outbreak in Italy started in the rich northern provinces. To prevent the spread of the infection to the rest of the country, Conti introduced what was the West’s first national closure in peacetime.

Putin warns the Russians
It is not just moving on. In Russia, the number of registered infected people increased by more than 4,000 from Thursday to Friday. To date, only 273 deaths have been recorded, but the numbers are rising rapidly: 41 people died in the last day. Russia started late with a curfew. Now President Vladimir Putin warns against high proliferation across the country.
In the UK, 888 have been killed after being infected with the coronavirus in the past 24 hours. As a result, the number of deaths has increased to 15,464 people. That means the UK has the fifth highest number of covid-19 deaths in the world.
More than 150,000 people have lost their lives worldwide.
Belgium also has high mortality rates compared to the population: more than 5,000 people have died in the country with 11.4 million people. The country now has the highest number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in the world.
Almost six out of ten people in the world have been partially or totally restricted in their freedom of movement and now they mainly stay at home, according to figures from the AFP news agency.
According to Worldometer figures, around 580,000 of the more than 2.2 million that have been detected in the world’s coronavirus are well informed.
