Molde played an excellent game and took three important points in the home match with Rapid Wien of Austria.

MOLD – RAPID VIENNA 1-0:

Molde were by far the best team, but they missed the first hour in the important Europa League meeting with Rapid Vienna on Thursday.

Magnus Wolff Eikrem kept the home team in the game with a magnificent save when Nei Omoijuanfo shot a near-perfect free kick to the far post.

– Incredible

At one point, TV 2 commentator Peder Mørktvedt exclaimed: – It’s almost unbelievable that Molde isn’t leading here!

– We hear people in the stands shouting “is it possible?” And I understand very well that they are shouting, added expert commentator Jesper Mathisen.

However, just minutes later, Ohi Omoijuanfo scored the liberating 1-0 after a beautiful attack from Molde.

– We seize some great opportunities, me too. Then you start thinking “is it that day?” But we pushed and we knew there would be more opportunities. It was lovely that he sat at the end. We deserved it, Ohi told TV 2 after the game.

Thus, Molde has established itself in second place in Group B, where Molde and Rapid Wien were expected to have to fight for a place behind Arsenal.

Bonanza of opportunity

The first big opportunity of the match came after nine minutes of play, when a hard-fought free kick by Magnus Wolff Eikrem found Ola Brynhildsen’s head. Goalkeeper Paul Gartler, however, kept up with an excellent one-handed save that avoided Molde’s lead.

After 36 minutes, Eikrem was back in front. The midfielder was surprised by Ohi Omoijuanfo, but Gartlinger saved. The return was for Ohi, but only a meter more to the side so that the forward could finish on goal.

Instead, it was the guests who came very close to taking the lead just before the break. Martin Ellingsen fumbled and the Austrians advanced before Marcel Ritzmaier threw the ball into the post from long range.

Horse with injury

Ten minutes after the second half, Eikrem was once again the architect of a great opportunity for Molde. The former Premier League pro hit the ball perfectly to Ohi with a touch, but the Molde forward’s shot went straight to the goalkeeper.

Soon after, Fredrik Aursnes abused at least the same opportunity before it finally succeeded for Ohi. Ellingsen pushed Kristoffer Haugen to the left. He hit hard in front of the goal, and there Ohi Omoijuanfo slipped 1-0.

In the same duel, Eirik Hestad had a rough encounter with goalkeeper Gartler and suffered a cut to his knee, for which he had to be substituted.

In Group B’s second game, Arsenal easily beat Irish Dundalk 3-0 at home.
