On Thursday, the commission presented its vaccination strategy, listing important steps to ensure effective vaccination when a vaccine is ready.
Among the recommendations is that Member States should ensure that they have sufficient transport and storage capacity and that they have sufficient staff with adequate training. Member States are also encouraged to be clear when communicating the benefits and risks associated with covid-19 vaccines.
– If we want to be successful with vaccination, we must prepare now, says Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. He will present the strategy at the summit that brings together the leaders of the EU countries in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.
– We have worked hard to establish agreements with the drug manufacturer. Now we must make sure that we are ready to distribute the vaccine when it becomes available, he says.
The Commission recalls that there will be limited access to vaccines at an early stage and therefore proposes groups that Member States may consider prioritizing. This includes health and care personnel, people over 60, people with a health condition that makes them particularly vulnerable, key personnel, and people who cannot maintain social distance.
