Emission-free and hydrogen ferries will be important keywords for the industrial investments that Prime Minister Erna Solberg will carry out to lift Norway out of the crisis.

In his opening speech to the Conservative Party national meeting on Friday, the Prime Minister noted that a lot of attention is now being paid to hydrogen internationally. Hydrogen has been given, among other things, a central role in the EU green environment.

– This means that the EU will invest heavily in hydrogen when creating new jobs and growth after the pandemic, Solberg said.

Now the Conservatives will also take the initiative to strengthen investment in Norway, he said.

New roadmap

Solberg noted that in June the government presented a Norwegian hydrogen strategy.

Now a separate roadmap for hydrogen in Norway will be followed. The work on this roadmap will now be initiated by the Minister of Oil and Energy, Tina Bru (H), according to Solberg.

At the same time, the Conservatives will take the initiative to establish centers, the so-called centers, for hydrogen in Norway.

– In these hydrogen hubs, it can be provided for public transportation, ship routes, ferries and industries that use hydrogen, Solberg said.

Transportruter

According to Solberg, the Conservatives will also identify transportation routes where heavy hydrogen transportation may be relevant, in addition to stimulating the establishment of infrastructure that makes it possible.

– Hydrogen offers interesting opportunities for Norway, both as an energy and technological nation, said the Prime Minister in the speech of the national assembly.

– The investment in hydrogen in Norway will be a good example of how we build on the experience we have accumulated. As we have done in aquaculture, metal, transportation, oil and gas. And at the same time developing new areas where we can create value and jobs for the future, he said.

Nordic ferry area

In the speech, Solberg also announced that the Conservatives will take the initiative to turn ferry traffic between the Nordic countries into a zero-emission zone.

– The Conservatives want to start a dialogue with the other Nordic countries in order to turn the ferry traffic between our countries into a zero emission zone. It’s a long way to go, but we have to start somewhere, Solberg said in the speech.

According to her, the Conservatives will also demand zero emissions on various ferry connections that are not suitable for electric ferries. Conservatives then envision investing in hydrogen in particular.

Koronapreg

It was a confident party leader who delivered the national assembly speech, and when she left the stage, it was to the beat of the recently deceased Jahn Teigen’s “Optimist”.

Solberg has now focused on reelection next fall.

But the 2020 political year has also been strongly marked by the crisis of the crown, which was reflected in the speech of the National Assembly.

– Is there something I dream about now? After this year we’ve left behind, then it’s as normal a Christmas celebration as possible, Solberg said.

According to her, vaccination can begin during the winter “if we are lucky.”

– But it takes time before we have so many vaccinated to make it safe to live our lives the way we want to. Until then, we must persevere, he said.
