The Equinor plant is located in Aure, north of Kristiansund, and consists of three factories: a methanol plant, a gas receiving plant and an air gas plant.

The methanol factory is the largest in Europe.

The fire is said to have started in a larger compressor building, according to operator Paul Ola Veste at plant 110. Industrial protection at the plant began to be extinguished. Eventually, the police, several fire trucks and ambulances, and an air ambulance helicopter from Trondheim arrived at the scene.

– It was confusing at first, but as industrial protection and on-site management gained control of all crews, they all came out with no lasting damage. They had been outside but had escaped, he says.

Several evacuees: – There was a danger of explosion.

Equinor evacuated several of its employees. Production at the plant was also stopped.

– All personnel from the area evacuated. They are about 30 pieces. They are out of the construction area and no one has been reported injured, spokesman Morten Eek said at Equinor this morning.

The fire department was notified that there was a danger of explosion.

– There were a number of gases that were dangerous and there was a danger of explosion, says Vestre in the fire service.

The explosion hazard disappeared when Equinor followed its procedures and shut down the plant, he says. Vestre believes the crew is now in control of the subsequent extinction.

– There is always the danger that a fire will reappear. Now they are dedicated to post-extinguishing, cooling and ventilation. You would probably think they do a good job and make sure everything is wrong, but there is always the potential danger that things will blow up again, he says.

I heard loud knocks

A man fishing outside says he heard a loud bang.

– I heard a loud bang. We also saw that it started to burn from a gas pipe. Now there is black smoke 150 meters towards the sea. The alarms are also full, said Geir Hermansstad, who is a fisherman just outside the facility.

The fire department does not know the cause of the fire.
