– We have seized quite a few weapons. I don’t have a full count, but with some of these people we are actually up to five guns. Virtually everyone has had access to weapons, Elvedahl says.
Weapons include both shotguns and rifles.
“We are definitely of the opinion that guns and drug abuse do not go hand in hand,” says Elvedahl.
Hash
The targets are women and men between the ages of 30 and 40.
Already in 2019, the case started with the customs authorities. The governor applied to the district court for permission to search. So they thought they had enough evidence to have good reason to be suspicious. They prevailed.
According to the governor, they are the target of the importation, storage and use of drugs.
– We have seized smaller amounts of drugs, mainly hashish, says Lieutenant Governor Sølvi Elvedahl.
The six targets were detained overnight on Thursday and Friday morning. It happened in connection with the deployment of a drug case in Longyearbyen.
– The action is the result of a collaboration with the customs authorities, says Elvedahl.
Released
All the accused have been released. The drugs were sent for analysis and police are now working on tracking the electronic traces.
This is not the first time the governor has discovered drug abuse in Longyearbyen. In 2015, 11 people were fined for violating drug laws.
The governor says they have not dealt with as many major drug cases in the archipelago, but they are constantly being followed.
