Donald Trump – To be investigated on September 11

NEW YORK (Dagbladet): Congress plans to establish an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack this year based on a model from the commission that investigated Sept. 11 nearly 20 years ago.

It arises from a letter Pelosi has sent to other Democrats in the House of Representatives. He also promises that more emergency funds will be set aside for the safety of both congressional representatives and the congressional building.

At the top of the agenda

Pelosi’s decision comes after talks with retired General Russel L. Honoré, whom she has asked to investigate security in Congress.

“Security is at the top of the agenda: the security of our country, the security of Congress, which is the temple of democracy, and the security of its members,” Pelosi wrote in the letter, according to the New York Times.

The decision comes two days after former US President Donald Trump was acquitted in the Supreme Court case where he was accused of inciting his supporters to the violent attack.

– In recent weeks, General Honoré has assessed our security needs by examining what happened on January 6 and how we must ensure that it does not happen again. It’s clear from their findings, and from the Supreme Court case, that we must find the truth about how this happened, Pelosi writes.

– Reveal

Both Democrats and Republicans have called for an independent investigation. Some politicians also believe that it is a way to hold Trump accountable after his acquittal.

– There is even more evidence that the American people need and deserve to hear. We must make sure to secure Congress in the future, and reveal exactly how responsible Trump was for the attack, Democratic Senator Chris Coons told ABC News.

Following the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, the US authorities established a commission that spent 20 months investigating what caused the attack and how similar attacks can be prevented. The commission’s proposals led, among other things, to changes in the way intelligence authorities coordinate their work and how Congress oversees intelligence work.

Now Pelosi wants a new commission to “investigate and report on facts and causes related to the internal terrorist attack on the Congress building on January 6, 2021”, as well as “interference in the peaceful transfer of power.”

Trump ally support

One of Trump’s main allies in the Senate, Lindsey Graham, has also called for an independent commission.

“We need a 9/11 commission to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again,” Graham told Fox News.

He voted to acquit Trump in the Supreme Court case, but is also critical of the former president.

“His behavior after the election went too far,” says Graham.

At least five people lost their lives during the attack. About 140 policemen were injured. Many people in the building were traumatized and feared for their lives.

During the trial, evidence was also presented that several prominent politicians, including Vice President Mike Pence, escaped the violent mob with a cry of anguish. There are still high fences around Congress and 5,000 National Guard soldiers help guard it.
