NEW YORK (Dagbladet): The Washington Post published on Sunday a telephone conversation between President Donald Trump and the election manager in the state of Georgia, Brad Raffensperger.
In the phone conversation, you can hear how Trump is pressuring, threatening and pleading with Raffensperger to “find enough votes to reverse the outcome of the elections in the state.” The talks could create even more legal problems for Trump, who resigns as president on January 20.
A pitiful macho figure
Trump’s behavior has been met with exceptionally strong reactions.
On Monday night local time, the president was still back in Georgia to run for two Republican Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue.
Investigation on the way
On Monday, Raffensperger, a Republican and Georgia secretary of state, said his own office was unlikely to launch an investigation into the phone call, which may have violated federal and state laws. Raffensperger believes that fairness issues can quickly arise because several of his employees participated in the phone conversation. At the same time, Raffensperger suggests in an interview with ABC News that the Atlanta-area Attorney General can initiate a forensic investigation.
Fear that the choice of destiny will cost them
– I understand the Fulton County Attorney General wants to investigate. Perhaps a suitable place for this, says Raffensperger.
– Disturbing
Fulton County State Attorney Fani Willis, a Democrat, even commented on the possibility of an investigation.
“Like many Americans, I think the news about the president’s telephone conversation with the prime minister of Georgia was disturbing,” Willis said.
She further says that the electoral committee in the state is free to send the case to her and the state Minister of Justice.
– As I promised the voter in Fulton County last year, I, as a prosecutor, will enforce the law without fear or special treatment. Anyone who commits a crime in Georgia, who is under my authority, will be held accountable. When the investigation is complete, this case, like all cases, will be handled by our office based on the facts and the law, Willis says in the declaration.
Many legal experts are shocked after Trump’s phone call with Raffensperger.
Many accusations
Among other things, Trump asked if local authorities could conclude that the ballots were destroyed in Fulton County and that the Dominion voting machines had been removed. He also claimed that Raffensperger could be guilty of a crime if he knew about voter fraud and did not report it. However, now it may be the president of the United States himself who has placed himself in a situation where he has committed a crime.
He was fired after Trump’s party
Raffensperger himself will not say whether he believes Trump broke the law.
– I’m not a lawyer. All I know is that we will follow the law, we will follow the process. The truth matters. And we’ve been fighting these rumors for two months, he tells ABC News.
Trump’s allegations have been refuted countless times by both local election officials and Republican leaders in Georgia. The judiciary has also rejected a host of demands from the Trump camp.
Clearly annoying
At a news conference Monday, the top commander of Georgia’s electoral system under Raffensperger, Gabriel Sterling, also spoke out vigorously against Trump. Sterling, who is a Republican, was clearly upset that he has now had to refute a wide range of conspiracy theories of Trump and his supporters for two months since the November election. He described the feeling of being there as “groundhog day” because all the rumors and accusations have been refuted many times.
– we are not naive
Sterling was also clearly concerned that Trump’s behavior could cause Republican voters to stay home in Tuesday’s Senate election because they no longer have confidence in the electoral system.
– Everyone’s votes will be counted. Everyone’s votes were counted in November, Sterling said at the press conference and encouraged everyone to go to the polls Tuesday.
