Disney +, Disney | Disney Plus dramatically raises the price

The energy giant was much cheaper than the competition; now prices are rising dramatically

One year after the service was launched in the United States, Disney Plus is approaching 90 million subscribers.

During a meeting with investors Thursday, the film company’s chief financial officer, Christine McCarthy, said the service could have as many as 250 million subscribers by 2024. That’s roughly three times what the company initially expected.

At the same time, Disney announced that they will raise prices.

When the streaming channel was launched in Norway in September, the price for a monthly subscription was NOK 69, NOK 20 less than Netflix. In the lead-up to launch, you can also purchase an annual subscription for NOK 590, which is equal to NOK 49 per month.

Raise the price by 30 percent

The new prices that McCarthy announced Thursday are NOK 89 for a monthly subscription or NOK 890 for an annual subscription.

This corresponds to a price increase of 30 percent.

Disney already has a huge catalog of classic movies and series, and more than 500 movies, 7,300 episodes, and 40 original productions were available at launch.

The content includes 30 seasons of “The Simpsons,” “Hamilton” and the youth favorite “High School Musical.” In the list of content providers, we find, in addition to Disney itself, brands such as Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic.

Some of the great movies are “Avengers: Endgame”, the escalation movie “Free Solo” with Alex Honold at the helm, “Hannah Montana”, “Captain Marvel” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”.

Expand the content

As the price rises, new content is added that is collected under the Star brand. Star includes an extensive catalog of TV series and movie content from, among others, Disney Television Studios, FX, 20th Century Studios, 20th Television and Touchstone.

Disney announces 35 new series released under the Star name in the first year.

Both the price increase and the Star catalog will take place until February 23, 2021, Disney reports. However, current Disney Plus customers will maintain their current prices for another six months, Disney said.

– Overcome our wildest fantasies

Disney Plus subscribers have become a major source of income for the Disney Group, partially offsetting the loss of revenue associated with closed cinemas and worldwide, and amusement parks closed due to the pandemic, states the company in a press release.

“Disney Plus growth exceeds our wildest fantasies,” Disney CEO Bob Chapek said at the investor meeting Thursday.

At the same time, Disney announced that a series of new original productions for Disney Plus will be released in the coming years under brands such as Star Wars, Marvel, Disney Animation and Pixar.

Eventually, the plan is to have weekly premieres on Disney Plus, promises the top manager.
