Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen told a press conference on Wednesday that the health service is under heavy pressure. This is why the country is introducing an even tighter lockdown.

– We are now introducing nationwide restrictions, which will apply until after the New Year. We expect January and February to be the worst months of the entire pandemic, says the Prime Minister.

– From the first day of Christmas until January 3, Denmark will actually be closed, says Fredriksen.

Now they are introducing the following measures:

  • Starting Thursday, December 17, shopping centers must be closed.
  • Beginning Monday, December 21, schools will close. Students must stay home.
  • From the first day of Christmas, December 25, other retail stores must be closed. The exceptions are grocery stores and pharmacies.

The new restrictions come just over a week after the government introduced a series of new crown measures. Then the country partially closed and the measures that were introduced have now been extended to apply to the entire country.

– In addition to all the restrictions that we already know about, such as restaurants being closed and cultural and leisure facilities being closed, retail trade with the exception of grocery stores and pharmacies will now also remain closed.

You can already see some signs that the shutdown has an effect, says Fredriksen.

On Wednesday, Denmark had its worst day of infection since the pandemic broke out, with 3,695 infections recorded in the last 24 hours. Displays the overview of the VG crown.

The case is being updated.
