Norwegian citizen Saad Jidre Hayd (54) was to be executed on Saturday, but has now been informed that the execution date has been postponed.

He is 54 years old and has lived in Norway for the past 25 years.

– The Foreign Ministry has worked consularly on this case since the Norwegian was arrested in April, and we have stepped up our work after the verdict dropped on Wednesday. We work through all relevant diplomatic channels, both here in Oslo and at our embassy in Nairobi, Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide said on Sunday.

– The verdict is not acceptable

He has been in direct contact with President Muse Bihi Abdi of Somaliland.

– What he received confirmation from the President of Somaliland was that the verdict will not be carried out now and that he will have the opportunity to appeal. As we have been very clear, we believe that the Norwegian citizen should have access to ordinary legal procedures, and that this sentence is in no way acceptable and should not be enforced, says the communications manager Trude Måseide of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to TV 2.

According to lawyer John Christian Elden, the death sentence does not analyze the evidence, but refers to two verses of the Koran as the basis for the death sentence handed down by the Sharia court.

– He received the death sentence handed down without the presence of a lawyer, says Elden.

– We have been in contact with the Somaliland authorities. Yesterday we had a conversation with the foreign minister in Somaliland, where it was confirmed that they postponed the execution, says Elden.

Tried by Islamic law

The 54-year-old himself claims that he defended himself with a self-defense spray when he was attacked in the street without warning.

TV 2 has had access to the court ruling of November 18:

According to the ruling, the Sharia court has sentenced Saad Jider Hayd (54) «For execution by shooting as revenge, cf. Islamic law », “After he deliberately took the life of the deceased … by sprinkling poison on the deceased.”

In its ruling it also establishes that the convicts “He has confessed to the act for which he was convicted”, and that the Central Hospital of Hargeysa has issued a statement in relation to the case.
