The package shipped earlier this week and contained ricin toxin, writes CNN.

Two tests have confirmed that the package contained the toxic substance that was detained by the police.

Probably shipped from Canada

The FBI and the Secret Service are now investigating the case. Now they are trying to find out who sent it and to clarify if there are other envelopes on the way in the mail, writes The New York Times. The White House has not yet ruled on the case.

It is unclear when the envelope was detained and investigators believe it was shipped from Canada, according to The New York Times source.

All mail sent to the White House is classified and examined at another address before being forwarded to the presidential residence.

According to CNN, ricin is an extremely toxic substance that comes from the Ricinius plant. The toxin has been used, among other things, in several terrorist attacks.

No antidote

It can be used as a powder, granules or in acid form. Ingestion of the toxin can cause nausea, vomiting, and internal bleeding in the stomach or intestines, followed by liver, spleen, and kidney failure and death from collapse of the circulatory system.

There is no known treatment or antidote for the drug.

In 2014, actor Shannon Richardson was sentenced to 18 years in prison for sending letters containing ricin to various people, including former President Barack Obama and then-New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, according to the New York Times.

Donald Trump has not yet ruled on the case.
