The first day of Christmas was a year since Ari Behn took his own life. The year has been marked by great grief for the immediate family, who lost a beloved son and father.
On the first anniversary of Behn’s death, Princess Märtha Louise (49) shared moving memories with her late ex-husband. In the post, he wrote, among other things, that this year’s Christmas celebration was very different because the father of the three daughters is no longer alive.
– He was always very proud
On NRK’s annual show “The Year with the Royal Family,” Crown Princess Mette-Marit (47) also remembers the year without her ex-brother-in-law, Ari Behn.
The crown princess hasn’t said much after her death on December 25 last year. In the interview, he does not hide the fact that it is difficult to talk about Behn’s death.
– I think it’s still difficult to talk about that. Ari was a person who was very, very fond of, and everyone was very fond of him, that he fought the way he did and chose to end his life. It’s very heavy, he tells NRK.
– Proud of the girls
The Crown Princess highlights in particular the three daughters Maud Angelica (17), Leah Isadora (15) and Emma Tallulah (12), who lost their beloved father. As is well known, the former made a strong speech at her father’s funeral in Oslo Cathedral on January 3, where she encouraged people struggling to seek help.
– I am above all very proud of Ari’s girls, and especially of Maud who managed to give this beautiful speech at the funeral. But also the rest of Ari’s family who chose to be open about it, says Mette-Marit.
The crown princess herself has worked with mental health for many years and says on the show that she believes the openness of the family has made more people open up to their challenges.
– I think people had the feeling that they had to take care of people who knew they were struggling, Crown Princess Mette-Marit tells NRK.

Friday was, as mentioned, a year since Ari Behn passed away. The tragic news left Norway in shock and pain on December 25, 2019. Behn was known for his art and writing, but most of all, he was probably remembered as the ex-husband of Princess Märtha Louise.
Crying and celebrating Ari’s life
Late on the first day of Christmas, she shared a post on Instagram where she wrote about her first Christmas without Ari.
– I just want to wish you all a Merry Christmas. This year has been a very different Christmas celebration because Ari, the beloved father of my three daughters, is no longer with us. Last year he chose to leave this planet on this day, the princess wrote, adding:
– We celebrate his life today, we mourn his loss and how much we miss him. It has been a day of love for everything.
– It was a problem since I was born
Märtha Louise also asked everyone to ask for help.
– Life hits us all. We cannot help it. We have to face it. I reach out to all of you who are struggling over the holidays. We who are loved. Know that it is necessary. Know that it is worth the help you can get. Please ask for help. Express how you feel. You are loved, the princess concluded.
