Infection rates continue to rise in Sweden. At the same time, approval of the relevant vaccines can take weeks.
Sweden is again among the EU / EEA countries with the highest infection pressure. Sweden’s incidence rate (infection cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days) is 727. On Thursday, the latest survey by the EU agency ECDC shows Sweden in sixth place after Luxembourg, Croatia, Lithuania , Slovenia and Hungary.
The latest corona numbers for Sweden show 58 new corona deaths (7354 in total), 17 new intensive care patients (3,510 in total) and 7,935 new cases of infection (a total of 312,728).
– Now we have about 7354 deceased. This is a very worrying situation for Sweden, department head Karin Tegmark Wisell said at the Public Health Authority press conference on Thursday.

She described the still steep rise in infection cases as follows:
– We have seen an increase in the last two months. We have a total of 312,728 cases of infection. In the last 14 days, 727 new cases of infection have been registered for every 100,000 inhabitants. This is a very serious situation. There are a large number of cases throughout the country.
– How do you see the numbers? Can there be signs of a flattening now? was one of the questions at the press conference.
– It’s hard to say. We see trends in certain regions that are stabilizing and have started to decline. But it depends on how each of us relates to the restrictions and regulations that apply, Wisell responded.

The European Medicines Agency, EMA, is continuously examining four vaccines, Veronica Arthurson, department head of the Medical Products Agency, said at the press conference.
Sweden and Norway are cooperating on the purchase of vaccines above the EU quota, and Norway will receive the same vaccines as Sweden.
A two player approval request has been submitted.
Vaccine recommendations are expected Dec. 29 for Pfizer / BioNTech and Jan. 12 for Moderna, Arthurson said.
– The formal decision is expected to come a few days later, he added.
The schedule is based on a number of assumptions, including that those who will approve the vaccines have the basic supplies they need.
The fourth vaccine currently under investigation is from Johnson & Johnson.
