In four weeks, the number of new corona cases in Sweden has doubled. Math teacher Tom Britton has calculated what can happen.

– If we don’t change our behavior, we can get up to half a million new cases of infection from early November to mid-December, says Tom Britton, professor of mathematical statistics at Stockholm University according to Aftonbladet.

He points out that the more people are infected with COVID-19, the more people also end up in the intensive care unit and are at risk of dying. This spring, Britton set forecasts that the death toll in Sweden could reach between 6,000 and 14,000. To date, Sweden has recorded 6,022 corona deaths. He estimates the death rate is now 0.2%, compared to 0.5% this spring.

If the development of the infection continues as it is now, it could have significant consequences, he warns.

– About a thousand people can die until the new year if we don’t change our behavior now, he tells Aftonbladet.

Sweden has so far registered 146,461 cases of infection in the pandemic. The figure for Norway is 23,225. Since November 3, the increase in Sweden has been 22,106 cases of infection. In Norway, the increase in the same period was 2,591 cases of infection. In the same period, the number of deaths increased by 84 in Sweden. The number of deaths in Norway has increased by three.

According to figures from the European Infection Control Agency ECDC, Sweden is now ranked 20th in Europe (EU / EEA and UK) in infection rate. Sunday’s figures show 346.7 cases of contagion per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. The Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Belgium, Liechtenstein and Slovenia are at the top of the list, all with insider numbers above 1000. Norway is second at the bottom with 112.5 cases of infection per 100,000 population. Finland has the lowest infection rate. Here, the last inside figure is 49.5.
