A couple can expect fines of around 125,000 crowns each after they jumped into a car at Melbourne Airport and fled mandatory quarantine.

The couple flew in from Canberra and were told after landing that they had to quarantine for two weeks in a hotel. The couple were not interested in it, instead they fled the airport in a car, writes a local outlet.

The following day, they informed the police in Goulburn, in the neighboring state of New South Wales, 660 km from the airport.

Health Minister Martin Foley says there is a serious violation of infection control rules and that the couple can expect fines of at least $ 19,000 each. This corresponds to just over 125,000 crowns.

Australia has embarked on the fight against coronary heart disease with strict rules. Among other things, states can introduce quarantine requirements for domestic travelers if travel is not “necessary.”
