On Saturday it became known that the new variant of the coronavirus may be up to 70 percent more contagious, said the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, during a press conference.

The British have had to endure new and strict restrictions as a result of the new variant, where those who live in London, for example, can only meet one person outside the home at Christmas.

Since Saturday, several countries in Europe have introduced restrictions for travelers from the UK. Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands have also announced that they will stop flights from the UK to prevent the spread of the new variant.

The Norwegian Health Directorate asks all travelers from the UK to Norway to be tested on arrival.

– We ask that everyone who has been in the UK for the last 14 days, and those who are now arriving in Norway, be tested for covid-19. The tests will be analyzed at the National Institute of Public Health to discover new mutations of the virus, said division director Johan Torgersen of the Norwegian Health Directorate in a press release Sunday afternoon.

All UK travelers must now show a negative covid-19 test upon arrival in Norway and must follow quarantine rules, the address writes.

The Norwegian Health Directorate’s request comes after they were assigned an urgent task to assess the situation regarding any measure.

Health Minister Bent Høie (H) emphasizes the importance of making quick decisions in the situation and warns that further action can be taken.

– It is important that we act quickly to try to prevent this variant of the virus from spreading further nationally here in Norway. We have strict entry measures, but are now considering whether further measures need to be implemented, he informs NTB.
