On Monday morning, Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke warns that the country could be affected by a contagion tsunami. As a result, the health authorities have decided to close all restaurants and bars for a month.
The measures come after a partial shutdown in the capital Brussels was not enough to start a new wave. The country is considered the second most affected in Europe with 756.9 infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. Only the Czech Republic is affected the most by 858.6, according to the European Infection Control Agency.
Infectious Tsunami
The Health Minister describes the infection situation in southern Belgium and Brussels as the worst and most dangerous in Europe.
– We are the most affected region in all of Europe. We are very close to a tsunami that will make us lose control. Today we can still control the result, but it is extremely difficult and requires an enormous amount of work.
– If the number of infections continues to increase, then the number of admissions will reach a level where we will have to postpone more and more treatments that cannot be linked to covid-19, which is also very dangerous. The government has only one message for the people: Protect yourself and your loved ones from getting infected.
From midnight on, restaurants and bars will begin to close, which also means a night curfew to prevent the party from moving out onto the street.
