It is a demanding situation. We have established crisis personnel and are closely monitoring the situation, while also having a regular dialogue with the UDI and FHI, says Nord-Fron Mayor Rune Støstad (Labor).

On Wednesday, a person was diagnosed with an infection at the asylum reception center. A total of 110 asylum seekers live at the reception.

On Saturday morning, the municipality sent out a press release stating that 39 other people at the reception have been infected. A total of 43 people have been infected with corona in Nord-Fron. Everyone must be connected to the asylum reception center. The mayor will not say if both employees and residents are infected.

– Sorry for the infected. They are innocently affected by this, says Støstad.

Expect more new cases of infection

SANA, which manages the reception center, informs the municipality that, together with the UDI, they are now managing the isolation of those infected in the reception center area.

– When the infection first enters a place where people live close to each other, such as at a reception, it does not surprise me that the infection spreads to so many people, says Nord-Fron chief physician Anders Brabrand.

The municipality states that the infection likely came to Vinstra through another reception and that the outbreak is classified as a domestic infection. The municipality expects more positive tests in the coming days.

– We must be prepared for more cases because more than 100 people live together, says Støstad.

Notification routines

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration says there is no reason to take self-criticism:

– There are notification routines. In this case, the receiving and operating operator is responsible, writes Ingebjørg Grimsmo at the UDI in a comment to NRK. The UDI is informed that the reception should have been in contact with the municipal chief about the move.

The Sana Foundation first stated that the municipal doctor was informed via emails, but after a separate review, the foundation now emphasizes that the specific measure was not mentioned:

– We want to emphasize that we have permanent contact with the municipality about measures in relation to relocation. But the specific move that is now mentioned was not mentioned in the emails. But it’s in the nature of things that there are continual relocations between receptions, says the foundation’s chief executive, Bjørn Halvorsen. He emphasizes that there is always a dialogue between the foundation and the municipal health service.

On Wednesday, Nord-Fron installed a mobile test station at the reception.
