A woman in her 30s became infected with corona after being admitted to Østfold Hospital in Kalnes last week. She is one of a total of four known cases of infection among hospital patients.
Additionally, 13 employees have been diagnosed with a covid-19 infection.
The patient, who lives in Østfold, now Viken, criticizes the hospital for what she believes are too poor infection control routines and poor communication.

Asbjørn Sorteberg, head of the hospital’s orthopedic department, responds to criticism of Dagbladet.
– Of course it is very unfortunate that this has happened, it is very sad that the patient has been infected in the hospital. The hospital works to prevent this as much as possible, Sorteberg says in a statement to Dagbladet.

The woman’s encounter with Kalnes Hospital began painfully and ended in anger and confusion.
On Friday, Jan. 29, the woman ended up in an accident, breaking her leg below the knee and smoking her cruciate ligament, she says. She was admitted to the hospital’s orthopedic department at the clinic for surgery, and she was placed in a private room and had a crown fit.
That same night, she received a negative test result, she says, and the next day she was placed in a double room awaiting the operation, which was scheduled for February 5.

But on the night of Tuesday, February 2, they placed her in the hospital corridor, among two other patients. The reason was that the hospital had to free up space for other more vulnerable patients, who were on the way, he says.
– So I said I wanted to go home, and I was pretty pissed off. In a completely normal situation, the message would have been quite easy to receive, but in this situation I think they should not have received the other patients and rather send them to other hospitals, the woman in her 30s tells Dagbladet.
The same day she was discharged from the hospital and returned home. She was then visited by her boyfriend, who is receiving cancer treatment, according to the woman in her 30s.
New day, new message
The next day, Wednesday February 3, he says he received a phone call from the hospital. He is then said to have been asked to self-quarantine, due to suspected infection at the hospital.
It was not until the next day, Thursday, February 4, that the Østfold Hospital itself became public and reported on the outbreak.

And that same day, Thursday, February 4, he received another phone call from the hospital, this time with a counter message.
– The hospital had been in contact with the traces of infection, they said, and they told me I shouldn’t be quarantined anyway, she says.
She was then visited by both her neighbor and her boyfriend, who helped her after the accident.

But with a new day, another message arrived. On Friday, February 5, the hospital called her again, now with the message that she had to be tested and quarantined for a possible negative result.
On Saturday he was put to the test and on Sunday he got the answer.
– Then the infection trackers called me and told me I had a crown, the woman tells Dagbladet.
Celebrated one year after his death
– What did you think when you received that message?
– I thought, “Shit.” But now I think mostly about my boyfriend, and I hope he doesn’t get sick and permanently injured from this, and then I think about the neighbor that I visited. Both must now be quarantined, he replies.
Additionally, he says he was “a little out of breath” from the message, but that he does not experience severe symptoms.
– I have felt a little hot, but I have not had any important symptoms, says the woman.

She is critical of various aspects of the hospital’s treatment and communication during and after admission.
She characterizes the encounter with the health service as “very confusing”.
– It seems that they have not had an overview of the situation and have not implemented the infection control routines. I also wonder if this applies to more people. I think they’ve tried the best they could, but I still think they shouldn’t have sent a patient home without testing or ruling out an infection first. The treatment has been very bad, he tells Dagbladet.

When Dagbladet interviews her, she benefits from knowing about the hospital.
– Do you expect the hospital to contact you?
– Yes, she answers me.
The woman further says that she is not in a great rush to contact the hospital.
– I’ll probably get in touch with management eventually. I have to do that. I may also need to contact the Patient Injury Ombudsman. I’m afraid this could actually lead to permanent injury to my leg, he says.
The hospital responds to this:
“From night to Tuesday, Østfold Hospital had a known positive employee who had symptoms on Sunday and on Monday she received a positive test. He had not had any contact with the patient. At this time, there was no indication that we had an outbreak in the orthopedic department. It is a known fact that we have hallway patients when the occupancy is very high. So we must prioritize the rooms for the patients who need it most, ”says department head Sorteberg in the statement.
It also explains why the hospital contacted the woman in her 30s on Wednesday with a quarantine message, why they turned around the next day, and why they made another U-turn the next day.

The department head further says in the statement that the hospital has “an understanding that this may seem confusing.
