Christmas in Oslo: – You must be prepared for strict Oslo measures

Councilman Raymond Johansen will present the package of Christmas measures at a press conference on Thursday afternoon, but is warning now that there will be no further relief.

– The coronavirus has not yet been eliminated, and in order to make measures more flexible, we must further reduce the number of infections. It’s the infection numbers that rule the city during the day, and we can all influence them by following the infection control rules, limiting social contact, and staying at home and in the immediate area.

Both VG and TV 2 experience that it will not be possible to organize Christmas parties in the capital with more than ten people. This means that the Prime Minister’s national Christmas rule, which allows households to invite up to 10 people twice during Christmas, will not apply to residents of Oslo.

In Oslo, a decrease in the number of confirmed cases was observed for the second week in a row at week 49, writes the National Institute of Public Health in its weekly report. However, they state that a great sustained effort is needed to reduce the spread of the infection.

– The infection trend in Oslo is decreasing and so far we have achieved good results after we adopted a social lockdown. There are many reasons to pay tribute to the people of Oslo for this, they both show understanding of the situation and respect the measures. I experience a strong community and a population that is willing and able to solve this together, Johansen tells Dagbladet.

Get support from Høie

Health Minister Bent Høie agrees.

– I agree with what Johansen says now, that the people of Oslo cannot expect great relief. Oslo still has too high an infection, Høie tells Dagbladet.

Despite the high pressure of the infection, Høie believes there may be room for adjustments at Christmas.

– But having the impression that the father is already in Oslo will be very regrettable, so be prepared for stricter measures in Oslo than in the rest of the country due to the contagion situation. For that I have perceived that the city council prepares people, he says.

Much of the infection in Oslo can be linked to spread in smaller groups and events where multiple people have gathered for a long time, FHI says.

– Several larger and smaller clusters are reported from all districts associated with schools, health institutions, prisons, and private homes.

In Oslo, therefore, there have been much stricter rules than in the rest of the country for weeks.
