LAST: Haukeland Hospital states that the hospitalized child did not have any underlying disease.

On November 23, there are nine patients admitted to Helse Bergen. Of these, four receive intensive care. Yesterday there is one more page.

One of the patients receiving intensive care is a child, reports Haukeland University Hospital.

In a press release Monday afternoon, the hospital states that the boy was healthy before receiving COVID-19.

– The child who is admitted to the intensive care unit does not have an underlying diagnosis, but is affected by a known sequela of the covid-19 infection, says the director of the clinic of the Department of Children and Adolescents of the University Hospital from Haukeland, Ansgar Berg to NRK.

MIS-C: rare late reaction

Information about the child is provided in consultation with the family.

The boy has developed a rare syndrome that occurs in some sick children and young people, Haukeland says.

Since mid-April 2020, there have been reports from several countries of a small increase in hospitalizations of children and young people related to a sequel to COVID-19 infection.

The sequelae are called multisystemic inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

The case for this was recorded in Norwegian children in June, Aftenposten wrote at the time.

– During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of infected children have been shown to have a mild course of the disease, Berg says.

Explain the subsequent action in more detail as follows:

The sequelae are associated with the activation of a general immune reaction in the body that in some children may require medical treatment and, in rare cases, intensive care. The condition is known internationally and treatment is available.

Six children in intensive care since March

It’s only been a few days since a child with coronary heart disease died in hospital.

This was the first coronary disease-related death among children in Norway. The boy had a serious underlying diagnosis.

FHI reports show that a total of 30 patients under the age of 20 have been admitted to the Norwegian hospital with coronary heart disease since March. Talk about debt from March to November 15.

When it comes to the intensive care unit, there are six people under the age of 30 in intensive care in Norwegian hospitals during the same period. But the tension between them is not expressed in the FHI figures.

Rare and serious disease among young people

Parents and children shouldn’t worry too much about serious heart disease, says Norwegian Pediatric Association leader Elisabeth Selvaag. Talk generally about coronary heart disease in children and adolescents.

– It is extremely rare for children to become seriously ill from covid-19. Most of those who have it have a serious illness or disability that makes them less tolerant of viral infections, he says.

What is a serious illness in this context?

– When talking about a very serious disease, it is mainly about a serious disability such as congenital syndrome and neurological disease, says Selvaag.

– Common chronic conditions, such as diabetes and asthma, are not usually risk factors for serious diseases among children, he adds.
