Call for crown measures – – Effect not documented

– The main direction of the appeal is to focus more on protecting the most vulnerable, rather than focusing on infection rates in the population, says Charlotte Haug, a doctor and researcher at SINTEF, to Dagbladet.

Haug is among those who have signed an international appeal to ease today’s crown measures, the so-called “Great Barrington Declaration.”

The controversial appeal advocates building immunity among the population, while protecting people in the risk group.

Several thousand physicians and healthcare professionals have signed the statement, written by researchers at renowned universities such as Harvard and Stanford.

Undocumented effect

Haug believes that the elderly can be protected by strengthening resources in institutions, having smaller groups, a stable staff and increasing staffing.

– What measures do you think have no effect?

– There are measures that involve closing or preventing people from meeting at home. The measures may take place early on, but they don’t have a documented effect in slowing or reducing the disease over time, he says.

It also highlights the harmful effects of intervention measures, such as somatic illness and mental disorders.

– You always have to weigh that. You can’t just focus on one disease and fool the others, Haug says.

Unfortunate consequences

At Politisk kvarter on Monday morning, Charlotte Haug and Espen Nakstad met for a debate on the crown’s strategy. Nakstad argued that the debate was good, but that protecting the elderly can be challenging.

– The problem is that young people work in residences and hospitals who are in environments where there is a lot of infection. No country has achieved this, despite having incredibly strict measures, such as a restraining order. The elderly have been very isolated, with very unfortunate consequences for many months, Nakstad says.

Nakstad also notes that more people under the age of 40 can become seriously ill if the virus is released.

– If you look at the US statistics, there is no negligible number of people who will die if the virus spreads in those age groups, he says.

I can never guarantee

Charlotte Haug believes that each individual has a responsibility to prevent the spread of infection, rather than having the authorities introduce intervention measures.

– How can you ensure that people take responsibility?

– We must trust that, it is the form of society we have. You can never guarantee it, but it’s a dangerous path if you think, “You can’t guarantee it, and that’s why you must take authoritarian measures,” he says.
