Manchester United fought back after a 1-2 loss to Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey with a 4-1 win over the Turks at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
– I liked the first half, the intensity and that we wanted to create chances and score goals. We could have struggled if it had been 0-0 at halftime because they are a good counter-attack team, but the 3-0 at halftime gave a very good feeling, says Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
In the second half, however, Manchester United were not so impressive.
– Ole Gunnar is happy, but even when United were good, Basaksehir created a lot of opportunities. Okay, it’s first and foremost the offense that you want to watch, and it was very good, but it wasn’t very good that they fell like they did. Ole Gunnar is focused on looking beyond and including the positives, but that such a bad team can get so far into the game is not a positive, says TV 2 soccer expert Erik Thorstvedt.
Bruno Fernandes scored the first two goals of the victory. The first was a merchant, while the second came after a goalkeeper error.
Marcus Rashford rose to 3-0 on penalties, before Deniz Türüc reduced to 1-3 on a free kick after a weak play from David De Gea’s goalkeeper a quarter of an hour before the end. In extra time, Daniel James countered 4-1 for United.
– It was a good game, but we could have been better in the second half. We stressed a bit and wanted to advance each time in search of more goals, but we also won two three important points. Now we have to forget this match and eliminate the errors for the next match, says Bruno Fernandes on TV 2.
Manchester United lead the Champions League group with nine points. RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain are closer with six points each with two games to play.
Dream encounter for Fernandes
Only seven minutes passed before Bruno Fernandes landed his dream hit. A corner kick was cleared just outside the penalty area, where Fernandes thundered in the middle rebound and made it 1-0.
– You rarely get that hit on a soccer field, says Erik Thorstevdt, TV 2 soccer expert.
– You must always be ready in the corner, either to stop a counterattack or to shoot. The ball ended up on my side, so I went to goal, Fernandes tells TV 2.
Twelve minutes later, Mert Günok was not so desperate. The Istanbul BB goalkeeper came out to catch a cross from Alex Telle, but missed the ball to Bruno Fernandes, who easily rolled it 2-0.
With just over half an hour into the game, the 3-0 scoreline came for Manchester United. Victor Lindelöf landed a good long pass in the back room against Marcus Rashford, who approached 16 meters, before Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo attacked and attacked him. Rashford hit a penalty, and the Manchester United striker himself certainly made it 3-0.
De Gea’s weak goalkeeper
The second half was a long haul of transport for Manchester United, but a quarter of an hour before the end, Istanbul BB cut a Deniz Türüc free kick behind a weak David De Gea.
– It’s an ending that David De Gea should have, says Petter Myhre, TV 2 soccer expert.
Just five minutes later, Edin Visca took the field and sent a shot that hit the crossbar over De Gea’s head.
In extra time, Mason Greenwood and Daniel James counterattacked for Manchester United, with the latter making the score 4-1 for the hosts.
Fredrik Gulbrandsen was replaced after an hour of play by Istanbul BB.
– It was well deserved (with Manchester United victory). We didn’t catch up at all and didn’t get the ball, especially not in the first place. Then it becomes difficult to create something. They scored four good goals, and we just weren’t good enough, the former Lillestrøm and Molde striker tells TV 2.
