The survey was conducted by the market analysis agency CGA on behalf of the British Beer and Pub Association, the British Inn Institute and UK Hospitality.
446 companies operating 20,000 pubs and restaurants responded to the survey in November. 72 percent report that they expect to close within the next year.
– Without a new approach and more support from the authorities, a large part of the sector will leave within a year, the organizations say in the statement.
– It means many closings and fewer jobs, but also that many of our beloved places will disappear forever, they add.
The results of another survey found Thursday that one in three restaurants fear they will not survive for another three months.
The survey was conducted by the British Central Bureau of Statistics (ONS).
Several rounds of shutdown
England’s pubs had to close their doors in early November when a new round of closings came into effect. They have also had to close restaurants, gyms and all the stores that sell products that are not absolutely necessary.
The closure will tentatively last until December 2, and the hope is that they can open before Christmas.
A new round of closures also began on Friday in the regions around Glasgow. They are scheduled to last three weeks.
In Northern Ireland, for its part, restrictions that have been in place for five weeks were carefully relaxed. But already next week, Friday, November 27, a new two-week closing will begin.
– It is obvious that tough, but carefully timed measures are needed to give us the best chance to celebrate a safe and enjoyable Christmas, says Northern Ireland Prime Minister Arlene Foster.
One and a half million infected
Britain is hard hit by the pandemic. So far, 1.4 million people have been diagnosed with the virus and 54,000 corona-related deaths have been recorded, figures from authorities show.
On Thursday, almost 23,000 new cases of infection were reported in one day.
In the past two weeks, there have been an average of 495 corona cases per 100,000 residents, according to the European Infection Control Agency ECDC. This is the third highest in Europe, only surpassed by France and Spain.
