Britain has been criticized for sending billions of pounds abroad to support fossil fuel projects.

Johnson announced the suspension of support for new oil, gas and coal projects the day before the UN, France and Britain host the digital climate summit.

“I am pleased to say that the UK will stop taxpayer support for overseas fossil energy projects as soon as possible,” said a statement from Johnson’s office.

According to Downing Street, the goal is for the strike to take effect in November next year, when the UK will host the UN climate conference.
