Bring the Storting together for pension negotiations

Fortunately, all parties have accepted the invitation of Frp and SV. I hope that we can quickly agree on proposals that improve the economic situation of the country’s older people. Our goal is for a new model to work starting this year, FRP leader Siv Jensen tells Dagbladet.

Together with SV leader Audun Lysbakken, he has invited the parliamentary leaders of the Storting parties to the pension negotiations.

– This is a historic opportunity to create justice for older people with low pensions. We want pensioners to have less to live on year after year, and we want minimum pensioners to lift themselves out of poverty, says Lysbakken.

Outstretched hand

In the letter to the other parties, Lysbakken and Jensen call the representative proposal that SV and Frp have drawn up in collaboration with the Pensioners Association, an “outstretched hand”. Now they hope that the other parties will take this hand.

The signals are positive from the Labor Party and the Socialist People’s Party, and now the government parties have also said that they will join the negotiation meeting.

– I am very happy that all parties are holding talks. The aim of our unusual collaboration with Frp and the Pensioners Association was to resolve a stagnant situation in the Storting, and now we can be in the process of doing so, says Lysbakken.

The first talks will take place in a meeting room at the Storting next Thursday, but more may be engaged digitally. The invitation is addressed to parliamentary leaders.

New settlement

It was last week that Audun Lysbakken, Siv Jensen and former LO giant Jan Davidsen, who now heads the Pensioners Association, put forward a joint proposal to improve the situation of the country’s pensioners.

Siv Jensen draws a parallel with the kindergarten settlement that ended with a full coverage of the kindergarten and which emerged precisely at the initiative of the two external parties SV and Frp.

– Now we, together with the Pensioners Association, have once again invited a large settlement to improve the situation of the country’s elderly, as we did with our children, he says.

The proposal includes six specific points. It aims to counteract the negative development of the purchasing power of pensioners this year with low wage growth, an increase in the minimum pension and a right for pensioners’ organizations to negotiate on the annual liquidation of social security.

Positive report

– What’s coming from SV, Frp and Pensjonistforbundet is good news for retirees, and in line with what the Labor Party has meant to say, Labor leader Jonas Gahr Støre said when the proposal came out last week.

Sp also commented positively on the content, even though party veteran Per Olaf Lundteigen had objections to the process itself.

Critical

The government, for its part, is critical of much of the proposal to SV and Frp.

– It could have important consequences for the way in which paid pensions will be regulated and for the connection between the minimum level of the old-age pension and the pension level for those who have earned a pension through a long working life, writes the Secretary of State Vegard Einan (H) of the Ministry of Labor in a comment to Dagbladet.

Einan believes that the SV and Frp proposal will affect the predictability of the pension system and will have consequences on the amount of pension payment one receives by participating in working life.

Will wait

The Conservative Party secretary of state fears the proposal will also affect an individual’s opportunity to retire early. Einan, who for many years was in the management of the Parat employee organization, believes that the conclusions of a public committee that in 2022 will present proposals for adjustments in the pension system should be awaited.

– The individual elements of the pension system are connected and the proposals may affect the effect of adjusting the life expectancy of the old-age pension, the rules for obtaining the old-age pension and the possibilities of combining the old-age pension with continued work and incentives to work. Through this, the overall sustainability of the pension system can be greatly affected, Einan notes.

FRP leader Siv Jensen, for his part, believes that it is not appropriate to expect this attitude.

– The country’s pensioners do not have time to wait for an evaluation, since pensioners risk many more years where they remain as losers, he says.
