Viasat boxing expert Roar Petajamaa believes Cecilia Brækhus must dig deep to win back her Jessica McCaskill belts in the new year.

In her 38th professional fight, Cecilia Brækhus suffered the first loss of her career when Chicago boxer Jessica McCaskill emerged victorious from the duel in Tulsa on August 25.

The judges gave McCaskill the victory with 97-93, 97-94, 95-95 after ten rounds.

In the aftermath of the loss, it was not clear for a long time whether Brækhus would continue his career, but three weeks after the match, the message came that the 39-year-old will use the rematch clause in the contract.

So the stage is set for a new Brækhus meeting at McCaskill in 2021, and the tone hasn’t exactly gotten more respectful since the previous meeting.

– All equipment looked old

After the first meeting, DAZN Boxing posted a video, in which McCaskill and his trainer and manager Rick Ramos share their thoughts on the fight, and the duo are not kind to mention the Norwegian boxing star.

– At first I tried not to have eye contact, but when I looked away there, and I don’t want to sound rude, but they seemed old. Everyone in that corner looked old. He’s already in the Hall of Fame and has nothing to prove. We are much hungrier, I thought, says Ramos in the video.

McCaskill says he was surprised at how the game unfolded.

– I think I gave her a lot of angles at the beginning of the game, which she was not used to, and she was not used to being hit in the clinch. I was really surprised, because when she hugged me, it wasn’t in a way that stopped me from hitting, and I took advantage of that, says McCaskill.

Think Brækhus seemed confused

Coach Ramos long ago suggested that Brækhus and his coach Abel Hernendez seemed optimistic and full of success before the game.

– There was an arrogance in the room – a cloud of arrogance among everyone who worked in that corner, says Ramos, who is supported by his student.

– Yes, they seemed very comfortable, and my job was to make the other corner very uncomfortable, adds McCaskill.

Ramos believes that Brækhus seemed confused during the match.

– I think she tried to have the Mexican style, which Abel Sánchez teaches his boxers, but I think she was confused. There is no real defense here. Perhaps I was a bit surprised by the lack of will in his shots, says Ramos.

After the first round, Ramos also believes he saw signs that Brækhus would not be in the ring. As McCaskill sat with his head raised and listened to the coach, Brækhus looked down as coach Abel Sánchez gave his instructions.

– Check it out. If it was you, I’d be nervous. She doesn’t want to be here. Abel doesn’t seem to be in control. Looks like there was some friction here or miscommunication.

Cecilia Brækhus did not respond to Nettavien’s questions about McCaskill’s camp statements, but posted the following response on Twitter on Sunday:

– Unfortunately, a lot of negativity comes out of your camp.

– It’s pretty bad, he added later in response to another tweet.

Petajamaa: – Needs a completely different tactic

Viasat’s boxing expert Roar Petajamaa believes Brækhus must dig deep and show himself from the other side if he is to regain the belts.

– I remember that the first game was difficult for Cecilia, considering it correct. He was probably influenced by Covid-19 and his stay abroad. What’s happening now is probably her chance to prove herself the best and make a comeback, which will be a smash hit. You need to think twice, make a decision and come up with a completely different tactic, Petajamaa tells Nettavisen.

Faced with the fact that McCaskill’s team believes that Brækhus looked arrogant, old and confused during the match, Petajamaa says the following:

– One is that he has changed teams. This means it can get unsafe, especially when tactics don’t work and you’re a bit rusty and things aren’t going well. If we’re going to be a duo, I need to know that I’m talking to you in a way that makes you listen to me and do what I say. If you don’t know your team well enough, then you don’t know which buttons activate, motivate, and get motivation. I got a bit lost in that game, the spark we’re used to when Cecilia is on. It didn’t seem like they were transferred to him, he didn’t get it out in the fight.

– This is precisely what McCaskill’s coach also points out. Could Abel Sánchez and Cecilia Brækhus be a bad match?

– It’s probably too early to tell. I don’t know how they are going to charge her for this match, but now she has been in Norway for a bit. Now he has to go down to the basement and find out what is the motivation to return. The good thing about a second leg is that all the titles are there anyway. If you’re eager to go back now and go for Katie Taylor or Clarissa Shields, then I’m impressed, but that requires you to go down to the basement and really dig yourself to the top level.

A date for the rematch between Cecilia Brækhus and Jessica McCaskill has not yet been set, but it is expected to happen in 2021.

Then Brækhus has a chance to win back the welterweight titles at WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring.
