The planned 1-kilometer relocation of Bodø airport will cost society 5 billion crowns for megalomania.
– None of the four development alternatives considered is close to being socio-economically profitable, conclude the consultants who have analyzed the project.

The price will be astronomical: – Our estimated cost framework for the development project is approaching NOK 7 billion and our analyzes show a negative net present value in the area of NOK 5-6.7 billion for the various development alternatives writes the expert group comprised of various consulting environments, including Holte Consulting.
Had one not known better, he would have assumed that the consultant’s deadly report was enough to put the relocation plan in the permanent drawer. But Transport Minister Knut Arild Hareide is driving.
– We have complete progress in planning the relocation of Bodø airport, says Hareide, adding that such relocation will contribute to a positive development of the buoy in Bodø and will have good knock-on effects throughout the region.

To top it all, the ministry has decided to plan for the terminal and the runway to move at the same time, and this is contrary to the advice of experts. – A development divided into phases, with the development of a new runway in the first phase and a new terminal building in the second phase, is the least profitable development alternative, is their conclusion.
The matter is really quite simple. Bodø wants more space for homes and businesses, and wants the airport to move 1,000 meters to the south. But the move assumes that Bodø’s population will increase from just over 52,000 to just under 70,000 by 2040, and it looks like megalomania when viewed through the magnifying glass of Statistics Norway’s population projection.
The price tag also just ended.
A thousand meters means 5.4 billion crowns less for society, that’s more than five million crowns per meter!
Experts believe that the current runway should be where it is for many years before relocation is necessary: - We recommend postponing the decision to build a new airport in the face of population growth when a level that increases the need for clearance or forecasts updated traffic reports show a clear need for a new airport.
How profitable or unprofitable the measure will be depends on the growth of Bodø’s population. Average annual growth of around 1.4 percent is needed, well above what both Statistics Norway and the Bodø Municipality believe.
What does this mean? Statistics Norway estimates that Bodø will have around 3,000 inhabitants from now until 2040, while the relocation of the airport assumes a growth of 17,000 inhabitants to be profitable.
This population growth is necessary to need the projected capacity of 2.5 to 4.0 million passengers per year. When completed, the airport will have a capacity of 25-30 aircraft movements per hour. According to Statistics Norway, Bodø now has just under 53,000 inhabitants. Growth in 2019 was 197 people, or just under 0.4%.
Funding for the move is not ready yet, other than the state and Avinor state taking their share, while local funding will also be provided.
Therefore, the state and Avinor must provide at least four billion crowns to carry out a move that is not necessary. These billions come in part from taxpayers and in part from airport fees and excessive restaurant prices at the largest airports.
As this is not bad enough, it is possible to imagine an even worse future outlook, namely that the corona pandemic and the climate fight will result in persistently lower air traffic in the future. On the other hand, it is difficult to see that the relocation of Bodø airport is profitable from a socio-economic point of view.
