The music legend’s catalog consists of more than 600 songs, written and composed by Bob Dylan himself (79). According to The New York Times, this is the largest music purchase made by a single artist in music history.
Neither Dylan nor Universal Music has released the full amount of the settlement, but according to NYTimes, it may be more than $ 300 million, which is equivalent to about 3 billion Norwegian kroner.
The catalog includes the classics “Blowin ‘In The Wind”, “Like a Rolling Stone” and “The Times They Are A-Changin”.
– It’s no secret that the art of songwriting is the key to all good music. It’s also no secret that Bob Dylan is one of the best performers of this art, says Universal Music Group CEO Sir Lucian Grainge in a press release.
With this agreement, Universal secures all rights to all Bob Dylan song releases. This means, for example, that if a company wants to use “Blowin ‘in the Wind” in a commercial, it has to pay Universal Music.
Bob Dylan, who started his career in the 1960s, has long controlled and owned much of his own catalog. Recently, he returned to the charts with the release of his latest album “Rough and Rowdy Ways”, which garnered positive reviews from critics.
In 2016, Dylan received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his contribution to the American copywriting tradition.
