A large fire broke out Wednesday night in the overcrowded Moria refugee camp on Lesbos in Greece. About 13,000 people live in the camp and now all must be evacuated.
But refugees and migrants now have nowhere to go, says Eline Tveit Holen, a Norwegian nurse who works for a British aid organization in Moria camp.
– Now there are people on the street, he tells Dagbladet.
– No more Moria
Today I told NRK that he woke up at 01:00 last night to the news that a fire had broken out in the camp.
Since it’s not the first time he’s burned in the camp, he took the news relatively calmly, he tells Dagbladet.
– But as the hours passed, we realized that all of Moria was burning. She’s no longer Mora, Holen tells Dagbladet.
– Uncontrolled Devastations
Fires have also broken out in other parts of Lesbos.
However, the local newspaper Lesvos Post describes the hell that takes place in the Moria camp as follows:
– The fire burns out of control.
They write that more than 3,000 tents and thousands of containers have been extinguished by the flames.
The police moved
Early Wednesday, rebel police were dispatched to the camp and deployed along the five-kilometer road to the island’s largest city, Mytilene, to prevent migrants from reaching the port city.
According to reports received by Nurse Holen, at times she must have demanded the migrants and refugees to leave the camp, partly because some exits were on fire and because the locals blocked others.
These messages have not been confirmed by the police.
The entire camp quarantined
But it is in the interest of the Greek authorities to gain control of all the refugees and house them in a suitable place, Holen believes.
This weekend, corona infection was detected for the first time in the overcrowded refugee camp, and comprehensive testing and infection detection was implemented.
– There are now 35 confirmed cases, but the actual number is probably several hundred. Now they’re in the puzzle, Nurse Holen tells Dagbladet.
– Stay in the tent. Do not leave the hell of Europe
Unclear cause
It is not yet clear what caused the fire in the Moria camp, according to the Greek fire service, writes the Reuters news agency.
Greek media still write that the fire may have occurred as a result of disturbances within the camp, including Greek CNN. The riots, in turn, must have arisen from the decision to quarantine practically the entire camp.
At least 25 firefighters and 10 fire trucks are now working to put out the fire inside and outside the camp, according to Reuters, which also writes that part of the fire service’s efforts have been hampered by refugees and migrants.
Dagbladet updates the case.
