John Kerry (76) will be the special envoy for the climate in the new Biden administration, writes the transition team of the new president.

The New York Times writes that Kerry will be nominated as a “climate sar” in the new administration. Kerry was the Secretary of State of the United States from 2013 to January 2017. He was also the Democratic presidential candidate in the 2004 elections, an election he lost to current Republican President George W. Bush.

The Washington Post believes that Kerry’s appointment appears to be a move to increase attention on climate change under the Biden administration. Kerry was the man who signed the Paris Agreement in 2015, from which Trump later withdrew from the United States.

– Kerry will fight climate change full time, writes Biden’s transition team according to the newspaper.

Additionally, Cuban-born Alejandro Mayorka will lead the Department of Homeland Security, which is responsible for US immigration policy.

He will be the first with a Latin American background to hold this position.

On Twitter, he writes that he and his family fled to the United States:

– When I was very young, the United States gave my family and me a refuge. I have now been nominated to head the Department of Homeland Security and will oversee the protection of all Americans and those fleeing persecution in search of a better life for themselves and their loved ones.

Avril Haines is nominated as chief of intelligence and will therefore be the highest ranked woman in national security in the United States.

Haines is a lawyer and previously worked for the Barack Obama administration as a national security adviser. She has also been Deputy Director General of the CIA, and was also the first woman to hold this position.

On Sunday, several US media reported that Biden will nominate Antony Blinken as foreign minister and Jake Sullivan as national security adviser.

On Monday, Biden confirmed the speculations and stated that he will nominate former Deputy Foreign Minister Antony Blinken to the post of Foreign Minister.

The new UN ambassador appears to be Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

The New York Times writes that the new team appears to bring together many who worked under the Obama administration:

“They are known as diplomats and have faith in the fundamental principles of the democratic establishment of foreign policy: international cooperation, strong American alliances and leadership,” the newspaper writes.
