Biden to appoint Deb Haaland as Home Secretary

In that case, Haaland will be the first of the American Indian peoples to become head of the powerful ministry that has overseen the Indian peoples’ tribes and their territories for generations.

Haaland, 60, is a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe and, as she likes to point out, is the 35th generation resident of New Mexico. His father was a Norwegian-American military veteran.

Native Americans have lobbied for Biden to appoint her, though it means a risky new choice for her place in the House of Representatives, to which she was elected in 2018.

The US Department of the Interior administers US lands, including tribal lands and national parks.

Haaland is part of Biden’s plan to create a colorful government in which minorities, both genders and different orientations, are well represented.

On Thursday, it was also announced that it is considering appointing Michael Regan as head of the US Environmental Protection Agency, EPA. Regan, who is black, works in environmental administration in North Carolina and was employed by the EPA for a decade.

Biden previously elected gay Pete Buttigieg as Transport Minister and former black General Lloyd Austin as Defense Minister, and is considering asking Gov. Jenny Granholm to become Minister of Energy.
