On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump got a broad front page in the conservative newspaper The Wall Street Journal. The newspaper’s lead writer casts doubt on whether Trump can come back and attract Biden’s leadership if the election is a referendum on Trump himself.

Strategists on both sides immediately argue. They believe that the president seems incapable of not always putting himself at the center of all problems.

– If the election comes down to a contest for personality, Trump will lose, The Wall Street Journal believes and points out that millions of the president’s own voters do not like his behavior.

The newspaper is targeting a press conference on Monday in which Trump should put the economy on the agenda after positive August employment figures. Instead, he stumbled upon a bunch of topics that the lead writer describes as an “entertaining conversation tower.”

The Wall Street Journal believes that Trump should speak out on the issues rather than satisfy the Democrats’ hope that he will speak more about himself.

On the democratic side, strategists and campaign staff don’t care that the election is a referendum on the president.

Bannon conducts opinion polls for Democratic politicians. He argues in a post in the political capital newspaper The Hill that Trump creates trouble every time he speaks or tweets.

– His only hope of victory is to make the choice on whether Biden is fit for the highest office in the country. But Trump’s concern for himself prevents him from focusing on anything other than himself, the Democratic adviser believes.

Democrats and The Wall Street Journal are not alone. Scott Jennings, a Republican public relations adviser, recently shared similar views in a USA Today post: “Biden wants a referendum on the person of Trump. That’s because Trump has better problems than he does.”

Jennings, who wants the president to be re-elected, however, did not put his fingers on the mention of the Trump person: “Very objectively, President Donald Trump gives you every reason to believe that he is not a good person,” writes Jennings. .

It points to the way people have been treated in Trump’s private life, the many around him ending up in court, the rude remarks, and the acceptance of conspiracy theories.

On the other hand, Jennings believes, Trump is on the winning side. He mentions tax cuts, conservative judges, anti-abortion policies, fewer regulations, Middle East policies, and that Trump is challenging China.

Not much emotion

Opinion polls may indicate that there are points in some of the criticism.

Biden’s strong management does not appear to be based on enthusiasm for the candidate. The Quinnipiac University survey recently featured measurements from the major states of Florida and Pennsylvania.

In Florida, he was tied at 58-45 in favor of Biden. In Pennsylvania, Biden has a marked 52-44 advantage. However, Biden voters were also asked why they supported him. They were given three options: because they like Biden, because he is the party’s candidate, or because they are against Trump.

Only one in four or one in five votes for Biden because they like him. Nearly two out of three in these states vote for Biden because they oppose Trump.
