My son was lucky when someone loosened the front wheel of his bike. Fortunately, he did not break his teeth, he did not become paralyzed and he did not die. This is a dangerous trend.

On one of the last days of June, my teenager was taking a bike ride with the class. On the way back from the trip, the front wheel fell off when speeding down a hill.

This resulted in horrible injuries to the arm and upper body and something to the face. Fortunately, it had a full-face helmet that handled the blow to the head well.

His entire body was bruised for a few weeks afterward, especially with chest pain, a bruised arm, and a sprained thumb. The training sessions and sporting events he was going to attend had to stop, swimming the first weeks of vacation was replaced by wound treatment and cycling was condemned. My son was lucky!

While we were sitting in the living room, I told him I was lucky and he looked at me strangely. He had also been stung by several wasps on the same class trip a few hours earlier, so he didn’t feel like the day had been the best.

The act often takes place in primary and secondary schools or in connection with school events, but the schools cannot be blamed in any way. It also turns out that some of the teachers at our school had sabotaged bicycle and automobile wheels for a period of time last year. Other parents have also told me that their children have had their bikes damaged: loose wheels, missing nuts, brakes that have been tampered with. This is shocking.

This is a culture that must first and foremost be addressed at home. Parents and guardians should talk to their children about the consequences of bicycle sabotage. And check the bikes before the kids go on a trip.

We understood immediately that someone had touched his bike. A wheel doesn’t just come loose. The bike was well maintained and serviced in advance. He had felt that the front wheel was different when he picked up the bike in the woods where all the students had left their bikes, but he didn’t understand that it was loose. The fall occurred just after he had started on the way home.

In our case, the school has taken the matter seriously, it has been important to us. The sabotage was reported to the police, however, without the police having any special opportunity to solve the case. Through the forest this happened, there was also a parallel class and students from another high school on a trip. It had required a lot of resources, and yet it had been difficult to solve. There are many such cases.

The school has replaced the bike with a new one through non-life insurance, and he actively uses it for training.
