Bergen: – We have no solution

The situation has gone from bad to worse in the office of the municipal chiefs in Bergen. News came in on Thursday that the last two employees at the office have also resigned.

The acting director of the health services agency, Anne-Lise Hornæs, describes what they are experiencing now as follows:

– It is a demanding situation in which we find ourselves. But now we just have to prioritize tasks and make sure we get the work done ahead with both the covid situation and hiring.

– Without solution

Hornæs can probably look forward to a quiet run up to Christmas, as his task now will be to replace those who have resigned. According to the acting director, the last two who have submitted their resignations are in two different situations.

– One has a fairly short notice period, while the other has three months. Now four full-time positions as assistant municipal chief physician and one position as chief infection control physician will be advertised, Hornæs says.

She is prepared herself for the fact that hiring can be a time-consuming process.

– We have no solution today, and this will be my main task in the future, he briefly summarizes.

– What is the reason why the situation has become like this?

– There are as many reasons for dismissal as there are people who have resigned. It is not a single problem, but several. It is a challenge, but we cannot give up.

The boss is alone

It was Bergensavisen who first reported the last two layoffs at the municipal chief doctor’s office. Now only the temporary municipal superior Brita Øygard remains in the office.

Øygard writes Thursday evening in an SMS to Dagbladet that he does not have a chance to respond to press requests today.

However, responds health advisor Beate Husa. She writes in an email to Dagbladet that they have now hired retired physicians to fill the need in an intermediate phase.

How critical is it to Bergen that this is happening now, with the infection situation it is in?

– We need full capacity, so this is not an optimal situation. Currently, infection rates are dropping considerably in Bergen and the situation is being handled well. But we need to recruit quickly.

How quickly is it possible to resolve this situation?

– The agency is in the recruiting process and I think there are doctors who are interested in doing these exciting tasks.

– Hear from the professionals

It was at the end of November that the problems began in the Bergen office. The head of infection control, Karina Koller Løland, quit her job just nine months after being hired. According to her, she quit because she thought she couldn’t do her job as efficiently as she wanted.

– During the pandemic, I was never placed in a place in the organization where I could do my job efficiently, Løland said at the time.

There has been a heated debate about the handling of crisis management in Bergen and the City’s strict infection control measures. In an interview with Dagbladet, Løland also made a clear appeal to the municipality:

– It makes sense to listen more to the professionals and let them in the right way, Løland tells Dagbladet.
