On Monday, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended that Biontech and the Pfizer vaccine receive conditional approval. The approval is now pending approval from the European Commission.

When the vaccine is approved there, the first delivery will be able to arrive in Norway on December 26. According to the European Commission, vaccination will begin simultaneously in European countries on December 27, 28 and 29.

Norway will receive just under 50,000 doses of vaccines this Christmas.

– The first people can be vaccinated during Christmas. For practical reasons, the first 10,000 doses will be used in the Oslo area, but the remaining doses will be distributed throughout the country, Høie says.

– It is very good news that we are now getting approval for this drug in Europe, says Medical Director Steinar Madsen from the Norwegian Medicines Agency to NTB.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommends conditional approval of the corona vaccine from Pfizer and Biontech. The vaccine has shown good protection against covid-19 in those who have participated in the study, states the Norwegian Medicines Agency on its website.

– Now the European Commission will approve this decision of the Scientific Committee as soon as possible, and then the vaccine is approved and can be used throughout Europe. With this approved vaccine, you can start getting vaccinated in Norway as soon as the vaccine is available, Madsen says.

Developed in record time

In the UK, US and Canada, the vaccine from Pfizer and Biontech has already received emergency approval.

In these countries, vaccination is already underway and hundreds of thousands of people have been vaccinated.

The new vaccine has been developed in record time. Generally, it takes up to ten years to develop such a vaccine. In contrast, the pharmaceutical industry has achieved it in about ten months. As early as January, they began work on developing a vaccine against what at the time were only signs of a pandemic.
