In Barack Obama’s new book, titled “A Forgotten Land,” Obama expresses concern and surprise at the country’s development.
What I did not fully expect was how events would unfold during the more than three and a half years that have passed since the last flight of Air Force One, Obama writes.
– The country is affected by a global pandemic and an associated economic crisis, with more than 230,000 Americans killed, companies in bankruptcy and millions of people without work. Across the country, people from all walks of life have taken to the streets to protest the deaths of unarmed black men and women at the hands of the police.
But the most surprising, according to Obama, is the unstable democracy and the struggle between two conflicting visions of what the country is and what it should be.
– A crisis that has caused political division, anger and mistrust, and that has allowed continuous violations of institutional norms, procedures and compliance with basic facts that both Republicans and Democrats once took for granted.
Unexpected result
Remember the atmosphere between him and Michelle Obama after Trump’s election victory in 2016.
New school requirement: Remove the screens!
– We were both exhausted, physically and emotionally, not only from the work of the previous eight years, but from the unexpected results of an election in which someone who was against everything we stood for was chosen as my successor.
Obama was the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. The book is the first of two volumes and will be published on November 17.
