The union steward for the Sandnessjøen hospital doctors is upset that three external reports about cancer surgery at the hospital became known before the doctors saw the results.

The union steward for Helgeland Hospital Sandnessjøen physicians believes that they should be given the opportunity to clear up misunderstandings before the reports are made public. Helgeland Hospital, Health North

– This is a bad process and does not reinforce quality assurance work, says Ingeborg Steinholt, union delegate for the Young Doctors Association (YLF) at the hospital.

Aftenposten wrote on Wednesday about two expert reports showing that many operations on colon cancer patients at Sandnessjøen hospital do not meet professional goals.

Discrepancies revealed

Two out of three external reports have revealed some serious discrepancies. And there is concern for both quality and mortality.

The reports were due to be presented to employees on Friday.

On Thursday afternoon, an emergency meeting was convened with the management of the Sandnessjøen Hospital, where, among other things, the leaders of the medical and surgical departments were present.

– We did not have a chance to clear up the misunderstandings before the reports were discussed, says Ingeborg Steinholt, representative of the medical union in Sandnessjøen. Private

Employees experience a lack of support

Employees clearly told Helgeland Hospital management that they reacted to the process.

– We have started quality work for the benefit of patients. But we experience that the reports that should be used in our work to improve are published in the media.

Regrets that the professional environment at the hospital did not have the opportunity to clarify what they believe to be misunderstandings before the reports were discussed in public and that employees feel they do not have support or confidence in the work they have done at the hospital .

– Do you not agree with the conclusions of the two reports?

– We hope the county doctor will be involved in this case. And we believe that it can be a good review of the patients who accompany us. However, we believe that some aspects of the reports could have been clarified if we had had a discussion in advance. One of the reports claims, among other things, that patients were not evaluated by an anesthesiologist before surgery – that’s completely incorrect, says Steinholt.

Chief Executive Officer Hulda Gunnlaugsdóttir deeply regretted yesterday that the document was leaked before employees were informed.

Municipal Superintendent: – Not concerned

Kirsten Toft is a municipal manager and municipal chief physician in the municipality of Alstahaug. He is not concerned about the quality of cancer surgery performed at Sandnessjøen Hospital.

– As a result of the aforementioned statistics from the Cancer Registry, quality work started at Sandnessjøen Hospital as early as 2017. Since then, there has been systematic and continuous work with routines and guidelines to prevent adverse events as far as possible says Toft.

She notes that patients who are operated on in Sandnessjøen are discussed in professional meetings between local gastro-surgeons and gastro-surgeons at Norland Hospital in Bodø, where X-ray doctors, pathologists and oncologists also participate. The decision on where and how the patient should be operated on is made in this forum. In addition, the Tromsø professional community collaborates with the hospital.

– Cancer surgery in Sandnessjøen therefore does not exist in a vacuum, but is part of a systematic work in this field throughout Health North.

– Do you ignore the fact that the department head’s concern is true and that there is something in practice that is not good enough?

– I am sure that when the supervisory authorities possibly go through this, they will also conclude that the cancer surgery in Sandnessjøen is done correctly.

11 mayors criticize the management of the hospital management

11 Nordland mayors have issued a joint letter expressing concern about how the company management at Helgeland Hospital has handled this case, among other things.

Mayors are particularly concerned that Sandnessjøen Hospital employees did not have access to reports from St. Olav Hospital, the University of Northern Norway and Oslo University Hospital, which have reviewed the records of patients operated on for colon cancer after requested by a local project group at the hospital.

– The management of the company kept the external evaluations close at hand. According to municipalities, only three key members of the company’s management came forward, the letter says.
