Aurora Borealis – Great Fire in Tromsdalen

UPDATED AT 6:45 PM: A fire burns in an old building in Evjenvegen in Tomasjord, near Tromstun school.

There are open flames and a lot of smoke in the place. People are being driven out of the area.

Smoke is seen and felt in much of the city.

All emergency services are on site. Police say on Twitter that area residents should keep windows closed. Task leader Espen Wang tells Nordlys that it may be relevant to evacuate residents due to smoke.

– We are concerned about the development of smoke and look at it. There may be asbestos in the building, and therefore there may be toxic gases in the smoke, says Wang.

There is an old building on the school grounds that is on fire. The building has been empty for over two years and is the closest neighbor to a kindergarten.

At 6:16 p.m., the police updated on Twitter. They say there is still open fire and a lot of smoke. There should be no danger of spread, but they repeat the message that the windows and doors in the area should be closed.

Troms Police District Operations Manager Roy Tore Meyer tells Nordlys shortly after 6.30pm that there is still an open fire at the site.

– But there is no danger of spread and the biggest challenge is the smoke.

It says the building that is burning is located between the new Elvestrand kindergarten and the Tromstun school.

– There is a building that has not been used for many years and we have no indication that there must have been people there now. It’s mostly been empty, but Tromstun has possibly used it sporadically, Meyer says.

The building was connected to electricity and Troms kraft has disconnected it.

Meyer considers the building lost.

It is too early to say anything about the cause of the fire.

The case is being updated.
