At least three killed, one with his neck cut off, in a knife attack in Nice

French police are reporting on Twitter that the bomb squad is on the scene and asking people to stay away from the city center. They write that an explosion that was heard in connection with the attack originated from the police.

– Do not panic, the situation is under control, they write.

Police confirm on Twitter that the police operation is taking place due to an alleged knife attack. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has called an emergency meeting. Prime Minister Jean Castex has also joined the meeting.

“I must again in this difficult situation our country is going through, just ask the whole nation to come together,” Castex told the media. President Emmanuel Macron will also join the meeting.

French authorities inform the media that a woman died after cutting her neck. According to Nice Matin, it is about a 70-year-old woman.

Attack on the shopping street

According to the BFMTV news channel, at least three people died and several were injured in the attack. The attack is said to have taken place at the Notre-Dame church, located on Avenue Jean-Medicin, Nice’s main street. There are an unknown number of injured.

According to BFMTV, the alleged perpetrator must have been arrested and taken to hospital.

According to local reporters, both the army and the police have moved to the shopping street and an area around the church has been cordoned off.

The French National Assembly is already observing a minute of silence on Thursday morning in relation to the attack.

Just over two weeks ago, France was rocked by the knife attack on history teacher Samuel Paty, who was killed and beheaded after showing cartoons of Muhammad while teaching freedom of expression.
