Police believe a 21-year-old Tunisian was behind this, but now they have also arrested a man who they believe was in contact with him before the attack and called him on the phone.
The case is being updated
Reuters reports that a 47-year-old man is in custody and is being questioned by police. The man is suspected of aiding the perpetrator and was in contact with him the night before the attack. According to the Nice Matin newspaper, he made a phone call to her.
On Thursday morning, three people died at the Notre-Dame church in Nice. An old woman was beheaded and a church servant in his 50s was beheaded. In addition, a woman in her 40s was killed.
Arrived in France in October
Police shot the perpetrator during the arrest. Now he is in the hospital. On Thursday night, French police confirmed that he is 21, from Tunisia and arrived in France in early October. He is said to have traveled to Europe via the Italian island of Lampedusa and arrived in France after being deported from there.
It is not known if he had any connection to any terrorist organization or if he gave any motive.
The man shouted “Allahu Akbar”, God is greater in Arabic, during the attack and after.
Minister of the Interior: We are at war
President Emmanuel Macron called it an Islamist terrorist attack. It’s only been two weeks since a teacher was beheaded after showing Muhammad cartoons for an hour on free speech.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin fears more attacks. It says that France is at war with “Islamist ideology” and that “we are at war with an enemy who is both an external enemy and an internal enemy.”
He said that France is not at war with a religion but with an ideology.
“We must understand that there have been and will be more incidents like this horrible attack,” Dermanin said.
