On Friday, the Modern Covid-19 vaccine was officially approved for emergency use by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA announced approval the day after outside experts approved the vaccine’s use. This is the first time Modern’s vaccine has been approved.
The decision is based on the results of a study based on 30,000 volunteers that found the vaccine to be nearly 95 percent effective in preventing Covid-19 disease without serious side effects.
The pharmaceutical company has worked with the United States government to distribute 5.9 million doses already this weekend.
Other approved vaccine
Last week, the vaccine was approved for use by Pfizer and BioNTech. The Moderna vaccine is the second approved vaccine in the United States.
“With the now availability of two vaccines to prevent Covid-19, the FDA has taken another important step in the fight against this global pandemic that is causing a large number of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States every day,” said the FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, MD. , in a press release.
Moderna has agreements with the US government to administer a total of 20 million doses this year, and a total of 200 million doses by June 2021, Reuters writes.
Record number of hospital admissions
On Friday it was reported that 114,751 people have been hospitalized for coronavirus. This is the highest number on record so far, CNN reports. Friday was the seventeenth consecutive day that the number of hospital admissions has remained above 100,000.
In the United States, 17,416,108 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus since the pandemic began. 313,035 people have died as a result, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.
