The crown crisis leads to few customers in the border trade stores in Svinesund and Nordby Shoppingcenter. Now food giant Grensemat is warning that there may be more layoffs.

On Wednesday, E24 wrote that 96 employees at the Nordby Supermarket and Maximat border trade stores in Nordby and Svinesund are being laid off because the crown crisis has practically stopped all border trade.
Grensemat AB, owner of the three stores, now announces that it has notified another 200 employees. The company writes in a press release.
Such notice is a prior notice that employees may be terminated. Border Food came with a similar notice in June related to employees who were told they were laid off on Wednesday. Grensemat has started negotiations with unions on the new warning.
Grensemat justifies the new warnings by saying that the corona pandemic has had a major impact on the company’s stores. Something that has happened due to the closure of the border.
“The situation has been and is very unpredictable for us. The consequences of the border closure due to the pandemic will be great for our loyal and good employees on both the Swedish and Norwegian sides of the border, Grensemat writes.
E24 has tried to contact Grensemat AB, which has not yet responded to our inquiries.
After the crown crisis hit Norway in March, the government has advised against all unnecessary travel for all countries. Later, it was opened for some regions with a satisfactory infection situation, but crossings to large parts of Sweden have resulted in a quarantine obligation when entering Norway.
The closed border has greatly affected cross-border trade. At the end of August, Statistics Norway issued a report showing that Norwegians spent NOK 28 million on cross-border trade in the second quarter. This was a 99 percent decrease from NOK 4.1 billion in the same period last year.
